Stop Junk Mail and Plant Trees at the Same Time! EcoLifestyle
Posted Mar 12, 2008 by Trish Smith Comments [0]

Every day we throw away tons of paper that should be recycled, but it obviously isn’t. If you were to visit your local landfill, you’d probably see that paper makes up almost half of the entire trash population. And who’s the evil ringleader ruling that population: Junk Mail!

The more junk mail that we throw away, the more overcrowded our landfills get and the more trees we have to cut down to produce future junk mail. It’s an inevitably sad cycle for both humans and trees.

Unfortunately, paper junk mail can’t be deleted as easily as internet junk mail. But it can be stopped from even going to your real mailbox thanks to the folks at Green Dimes, who will not only stop up to 90% of your junk mail, but they’ll also plant trees for you!

What’s the Deal?

If you’re a college student getting relentlessly hounded by credit card offers, or just an average Joe receiving too many magazines that you didn’t even sign up for, then this is the perfect program for you to join.

Basically, here’s how it works:

  1. You can choose between the $20 or $36 a year programs. With both programs you’ll get removed from junk mail lists, monthly monitored accounts and 10 trees planted from a non-profit organization like American Forests, Sustainable Harvest International or Trees for the Future. (The added bonus of the $36 a year program is that you get cool items like a reusable bag, a t-shirt and fluorescent bulbs.)
  2. If you receive excess catalogues you can specifically choose the ones you want removed and get a tree planted for each one.
  3. Every month GreenDimes reviews marketer lists to make sure that your name stays out of the junk mail loop.

One of the greatest perks about the program is that it only costs you $10 to renew your membership after the first year, or if you have a change of address, and that is well worth the type of service you’ll be receiving.
