Green Vending Machines to be Tested by PepsiCo

Living an eco lifestyle includes going green in every aspect of your life, from using natural cleaning products that work to wearing organic clothing. But did you ever think that a vending machine, which operates 24 hours a day and consumes thousands of kilowatt-hours of energy each year, would also be able to become a green energy efficient vending machine?

According to the Pepsi Bottling Group, the company has created “the most climate-friendly vending machines ever placed in the United States.” And these green vending machines are going to be tested in high-traffic areas in our country’s capital - Washington DC. The PepsiCo Green Project

The PepsiCo company has been dedicated to becoming a leader in sustainability since its creation of Performance with Purpose, a business motto which states that the company’s financial success will go hand-in-hand with its social and environmental performance.

So how are these new green vending machines going to reduce the carbon footprint of the PepsiCo company?

  • Machines use carbon dioxide (CO2) instead of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs)
  • Use insulating foam so less energy is consumed
  • Generates 12% less greenhouse gas emissions

Overall, these green vending machines have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 282,000 metric tons/year, which is equivalent to removing 52,000 cars from the road in a year.

So what are PepsiCo’s other green plans for the future?

  • Reduce water consumption by 20%
  • Reduce electricity consumption by 20%
  • Reduce fuel consumption by 25%

Energy conservation is at the top of the company’s list. Hopefully, with the success of these energy efficient vending machines, Pepsi will not only be remembered for its classic taste, but also for its green efforts.

Ah that is just great! I love pepsi, and now even more.
The best resolution is making a grassed surface on top, then it will be CO2 neutral I guess!

    Great blog, I will subscribe!
