Posted Mar 17, 2008 by Trish Smith Comments [1]

St. Patrick’s Day is a 24-hour-long day of festivities, so it would be a travesty if I didn’t give you some great green tips on the greenest day of the year!

I’ve compiled a list tips and advice people can follow to make their St. Patty’s Day both fun and eco-friendly.

So if you’re showing your Irish sense of style and wearing all green today, then following these tips will make you even greener!

St. Patty’s Day Eco-Friendly Tips

Anyone interested in living an eco-lifestyle should find these tips easy and fun to follow.

Here’s how you can celebrate everything green today:

  • Choose an organic cotton t-shirt like the Irish Princess or the Irish Organizer Green T-Shirt from CafePress.com.
  • If you decide to use food coloring to dye your food or drinks green, use non-toxic and organic food coloring, like Organic Green Natural Food Color from Nature’s Flavors.
  • If possible, go to a restaurant or pub that is close enough to walk or bike to. This will cut down on fuel emissions. If you do need to drive a car, carpool with others to limit the amount of vehicles on the road.
  • Serve your Irish dishes and drinks on washable dishes instead of using paper or plastic. This will greatly reduce your waste.
  • If you do want to use throw-away party supplies, you can get biodegradable utensils and recycled napkins here.
  • When you think about Irish food, you usually imagine potatoes and cabbage. Go organic with your vegetables today. Go to a local farmer’s market or your neighborhood supermarket and buy naturally-grown food that doesn’t contain harmful pesticides.
  • Have a planting party! Before you go out tonight, how about planting a white clover (which is considered the original Irish Shamrock). Here’s a great article on how to plant these from seeds. If you don’t want to plant a shamrock, any kind of plant will do.
  • If you decide to decorate your home or office today for St. Patty’s Day, buy hanging decorations that you can reuse next year. Or, you can even get eco-friendly candles, like this 100% natural soy 8oz. Mason Jar Soy Candle from Caterpillars Soy Candles to light up your party.
  • Your day just wouldn’t be the same without a great dessert! Check out this list of organic desserts from Epicurious.com, or these great vegan desserts at VeganCoach.com.

These are just a few ways to make your St. Patrick’s Day both fun and eco-friendly. Just remember that these tips can be followed every day of the year!
