Our friend Colleen Maleski from Ohio State University sent Green Student U this information about the WWF Earth Hour 2009 event:

“More than a dozen leading colleges and universities across the U.S. are turning out and signing on in support of Earth Hour. Earth Hour is a global World Wildlife Fund initiative in which millions of people around the world will cast a vote in favor of action on climate change by turning off their lights for one hour on March 28, 2009 at 8:30 pm local time. Already, more than 600 cities in over 78 countries have officially signed up to participate as well.

Currently, the list of campuses participating in Earth Hour 2009 includes:

  • Columbia University
  • Howard University
  • Michigan State University
  • Northwestern University
  • University of Miami
  • University of Nevada Las Vegas
  • University of Virginia

Some institutions will be turning off their lights of their schools buildings, and others will participate in a variety of other ways, from incorporating climate change into classroom discussions to sending letters to elected officials via the main www.EarthHourUS.org website.

University students everywhere can participate as individuals, but are encouraged to reach out to friends, family members, and university officials so more lights can go out.

The Earth Hour U.S. website offers a College Toolkit, which provides resources to engage others. http://www.earthhourus.org/action_college_students.php

The Official Earth Hour 2009 video is available at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BjWD8pbK5t8.

Turn out, take action and vote earth! Sign up at www.earthhourus.org.”

Green Student U wants to thank Colleen for this valuable information.  We hope that it inspires you to turn your campus into a green campus and to spread the word of climate change to everyone that you know.
