Besides being one of the most widely recognized colleges in the U.S., the College of William & Mary is also aiming to be one of the most sustainable in the nation.

In its efforts to promote sustainable development and sustainable living, just like other Sustainable and Eco Friendly College Programs we have noted, the college recently launched a new website that includes green campus projects and information on volunteering for green proposals.
What’s the purpose?
Created by the College’s Committee on Sustainability (COS), the new website is an extension of the entire campus’ green initiatives. It is supported by the “Green Fee,” which is a $30 fee that students pay annually to support sustainability projects and research at William & Mary.
Our friend Erin Zagursky, a member of the University Relations team, gave us this information on the Green Fee:
“The fee generates more than $200,000 each year for things such as facility improvements, research grants, sustainability projects and support for the “Green Endowment.” In November, the committee announced its first round of green projects, including $16,000 for the current campus recycling effort; $3,000 to support faculty/student research on solar cell development; $15,000 for installation of occupancy sensors at Swem Library; $16,000 for electric metering in the Randolph Complex; and $3,000 for storm water runoff monitoring stations. A second round of projects will be announced later this semester.”
With all of these wonderful projects it’s no wonder that an entire sustainable development website was created for the William & Mary students. This is a great effort from the staff and students of the college, and they are truly putting their money in the right place.
