<p>Since 1837 Popular Science Magazine has been the top-rated source of science and technology news in the word. Since they went online in 1999 with <a title="PopSci.com" href="http://www.popsci.com/" target="_blank">PopSci.com</a>, they&#8217;ve reached an even larger audience who continues to crave the latest up-to-date information on society&#8217;s advancements.</p>
<div class="inlineImageBox"><a href="http://www.popsci.com/" target="_blank"><img title="popsci logo" src="/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/Blog/popsci_logo.jpg" border="0" alt="popsci logo" /></a></div>
<p>With iconic credibility, one can&#8217;t ignore PopSci&#8217;s latest endeavor to rate the top 50 greenest cities in America.</p>
<p>Using data compiled from the <a title="U.S. Census Bureau" href="http://www.census.gov/" target="_blank">U.S. Census Bureau</a> and <a title="National Geographic Society's Green Guide" href="/our_world_today/popular_science_names_50_greenest_cities_in_us.aspx" target="_blank">National Geographic Society&#8217;s Green Guide</a>, as well as rating the cities in four major categories, the online magazine shows America that we <em>are</em> making progress in the fight against global warming.</p>
<p><strong>Top 10 Greenest Cities</strong></p>
<p>Out of a possible overall score of 30 points, the top ten cities all acquired over 21 points in the four main categories.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s how the cities were rated:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.popsci.com/environment/article/2008-02/americas-50-greenest-cities?page=1" target="_blank"><img title="popsci green scores" src="/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/Blog/popsci_green_scores.jpg" border="0" alt="popsci green scores" /></a></p>
<p>The top 10 greenest cities are:</p>
<ol type="1">
<li>Portland, Oregon</li>
<li>San Francisco, California</li>
<li>Boston, Massachusetts</li>
<li>Oakland, California</li>
<li>Eugene, Oregon</li>
<li>Cambridge, Massachusetts</li>
<li>Berkeley, California</li>
<li>Seattle, Washington</li>
<li>Chicago, Illinois</li>
<li>Austin, Texas</li>
</ol>
<p>You can see the full list of green cities <a title="here" href="http://www.popsci.com/environment/article/2008-02/americas-50-greenest-cities?page=1" target="_blank">here</a>.</p>
<p>This article proves that America has not totally gone to waste in the eyes of the environment, but we still need to work harder to improve our air quality and <a title="recycling" href="/encyclopedia/recycling" target="_self">recycling</a> efforts, and to <a title="reduce our carbon footprint" href="/encyclopedia/carbon_footprint/reduce_footprint" target="_self">reduce our carbon footprint</a>.</p>
<p>According to a <a title="Yale Study" href="http://www.newsweek.com/id/98010" target="_blank">Yale Study</a> of the world&#8217;s greenest countries, the U.S. ranks 39, and even though that&#8217;s modest, it&#8217;s also not that great. So let&#8217;s all keep trying to improve our green efforts and show the entire world that we care about the environment.</p>
