Who doesn’t love a nice, comfortable pair of flip flops?

The summer is almost here, so flip flops are the perfect shoes for guys to wear with shorts and a t-shirt, or for ladies to make a fashion statement in a cool summer dress.

One way you can sport flip flops while also saving the environment is to purchase recycled flip flops. These flip flops are often made from reused materials such as rubber tires, fabric and cork, so they help reduce landfill waste. They also happen to be very comfortable.

Make a Flippin’ Decision

No matter what music festival, baseball game, green gathering or other casual event you attend, you’ll see people wearing flip flops.

Whether you practice living an eco lifestyle or not, it’s important to choose a pair of well-made, recycled flip flops instead of a cheap pair that you’ll just throw away after a few months. Instead of ending up in a landfill, your flip flops might just make it through a few extra summers.

Check out these cool recycled flip flops for women and men, and decide which pair best suits your personal style:

We’ve all heard about foreign exchange programs that let you stay with families from other countries, but have you ever heard of an organic farm exchange program?

Well that’s exactly what WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) is: a program that gives hosts a chance to share their organic farming experience with volunteers and allows volunteers to help hosts with daily organic farming activities.

There are currently over 500 hosts in the U.S.

What is WWOOF?

WWOOF was created in the UK in 1971 as a way to find help for people working on organic farms.

The organic farm hosts provide housing and food for the volunteers, who in return help them with their daily farming tasks.

In exchange for helping hosts with daily tasks, volunteers:

Don’t have to pay hosts for their stay

Get free accommodations and food

Learn about organic growing and lifestyles

The volunteers not only get to travel to different states or countries, but they also get to learn about the unique eco-lifestyles of these organic farmers.

Neither the hosts nor volunteers pay each other for the experience, but there is a small fee charged by the WWOOF network to maintain the program.

The best thing is that the program is available in so many different countries, from Australia and Costa Rica to Spain and Uganda. You can see a complete listing of countries here.

If you’d like to be a volunteer you can click here, or if you’d like to be a host you can click here.

This is truly a great opportunity for students or anyone interested in organic farming to get first-hand experience from professional organic farmers. There really are so many more things you can learn in person than by reading a book or watching a television show.

You may not believe it, but the organic food industry is actually doing pretty well despite the recent problems with the economy.

The USDA Economic Research Service (ERS), which provides economic information and research for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, revealed in a current report that, “Organic products have shifted from being a lifestyle choice for a small share of consumers to being consumed at least occasionally by a majority of Americans.”

For those of us living an eco-lifestyle, this is great news, and it might inspire others to switch to healthier organic foods.

Destined for Organic

If you don’t believe in the mainstreaming of organic food, here are a few true facts from the ERS:

The 2006 price for a half-gallon container of milk ranged from 60% above non-organic milk for private label organic milk to 109% above non-organic for branded organic milk.

Consumers prefer organic food because of their health concerns, as well as for environment and animal welfare concerns.

Consumers are now willing to pay premium prices for organic foods.

Organic food sales have quintupled over the same period, from $3.6 billion to $21.1 billion last year.

Fruit and vegetables are the biggest organic food sellers at 37%.

Organic dairy products sell at 16%.

Organic beverages (grew by 40% in 2008) and packaged foods are at 13%.

Organic breads and grains achieved 35% growth over the year.

The Organic Trade Association, which promotes organic trading to protect the environment and to better people’s lives, even said that organic food sales grew by 4.9% just this year, which is a huge increase for the organic industry.

It’s good to see that organic food and organic food stores are becoming more mainstream because it means that more of us are starting to care about our health and the impact that our food handling practices have on the environment.

When you live in a dorm room on campus for almost 4 years of your life your college becomes more than just an academic setting: it becomes your home. So don’t you want your home to be reflective of the eco lifestyle that you’re living?

Of course you do, so besides greening your lunch and controlling your college trash, how else can you green your dorm room?

Try indoor green plants.

Green plants are not only a great way to liven up your living space, but they’re also one of the most organic and natural ways to clean the air around you.

What type of green plants?

There are many factors that go into deciding which indoor green plant is best for your dorm room. Do you have enough natural sunlight coming in your room, or will you have to convert to artificial light?

Choose the type of plant that is easiest to take care of with your lifestyle.

Artificial light

The one factor that is similar in all dorm rooms is the use of artificial light, which will be available regardless if there are small or big windows. If you’re constantly on-the-go and you want a plant that doesn’t need sunlight or continuous care then an Aspidistra is perfect for you. Known to grow under the forests of Asia, this plant can go days without being watered and can still grow in temperatures up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Artificial and Natural Light

If you do have sunlight in your room then the African Violet is another green plant choice. Even though they are native to Tanzania, many people around the world use them as indoor green plants. The African Violet grows well under both artificial light and sunlight, but it should never be put in direct sunlight. Flower colors include pink, violet, red, yellow and white. As for watering, keep the soil moist.

Plenty of Natural Light

If you’re lucky enough to have plenty of sunlight in your room then you should take advantage of growing English Ivy! Even though it may be considered a weed in most states, this species of plant native to Europe is perfect for draping around rooms and adding a hint of green to your space. The cool thing about this plant is that it grows quickly with direct sunlight, and even grows in the shade. Just keep it away from a heater or freezing temperatures. You can water it by misting it with a spray bottle and even start a new plant by cutting and planting a small portion of the root.

A Light Lunch

Don’t forget that you can always purchase a counter herb garden box that can easily grow basil, chives and other garden herbs. You’ll have everything that you need to keep them growing.

Also, greens like lettuce are good for indoor growth, as well as carrots and radishes.

Now that you know what you can grow in your dorm room, go out and start greening your space! You’ll find that these indoor green plants will provide so much more than just clean air.

The kitchen is one room in a house where people spend a majority of their time. This is because people love to eat, and there’s nothing better than a home-cooked meal.

If you practice living an eco-lifestyle you want to make sure that your kitchen is both clean and green. This doesn’t mean that you have to spend an exorbitant amount of money on new bamboo flooring or energy efficient appliances. It means making simple changes that you can afford to live with.

Get Green and Clean

It doesn’t take a lot of your own green money to have a green kitchen. Here are a few things you can do to:

1. Use your dishwasher

You may think that using a dishwasher will waste a lot of water, but if you wait to run it when it’s completely full you’ll actually save more water.

Think about it: when you hand wash your dishes you have a continuous stream of water going. That can add up, especially if you do it every time you have dishes. But if you run your dishwasher once every few days, and turn off the heat-drying option to save energy, you will reduce your overall water use.

2. Don’t throw grease and oil down the drain

Not only can this clog your drains, but this can make it difficult for sewage treatment facilities to clean. Or if you’re creative enough, you can make fuel from your used grease like the students from UCF!

3. Recycle

From cans of beans and ketchup containers to milk jugs and glass jars, there are literally hundreds of things you can recycle in the kitchen.

You can either use a separate recycling bin for these products, or place them in individual bags so you can carry them easily to the curbside or to the nearest recycling center. Don’t forget that you can recycle old steel appliances as well.

4. Compost

You can compost many things besides throwing them away in the trash. You can make your own compost pile at home, or purchase a composter, like the ones listed at LowImpactLiving.com. And if you’re an avid coffee drinker, check out our blog post on How to Recycle Your Used Coffee Grinds.

5. Grow your own food

Instead of buying expensive groceries that are processed and wrapped in excess packaging, how about growing your own food! If you have a yard you should plant a few of your favorite fruits, vegetables and herbs.

If you live in an apartment or townhouse in the city and don’t have a yard, start an indoor garden. Here’s a great article from Apartment Living that shows you how to do this.

6. Switch to CFLs

Above your stove, over your sink and on your overhead lighting, switch to using compact fluorescent bulbs instead of regular light bulbs. CFLs last up to 10 times longer than regular bulbs, which mean they leave a smaller carbon footprint.

7. Use proper cookware

Use glass and ceramic baking dishes because they require less heat than other types of dishes. Also, use non-stick pans without Teflon because Teflon is made from chemicals that are harmful to humans, and use metal utensils instead of plastic ones so they can be recycled.

8. Use green cleaners

After cooking you always need to clean up. What you spray on your counters and in your oven could leave harmful residue that could be absorbed by your food. Always use non-toxic organic sprays, soap, dishwasher detergent and more when cleaning your kitchen.

9. Reuse your water

Most people drain the excess water from boiling vegetables and spaghetti noodles right into the sink. Instead of doing this keep the water in a container, let it cool down and then use it to water your indoor and outdoor plants.

10. Purchase biodegradable trash bags

Many of the plastic garbage bags that people use in their kitchen for trash take years to decompose in landfills, so if you buy biodegradable kitchen garbage bags like the ones offered at BioBag.com then they will compost easily in the landfill.

If you can’t find biodegradable bags, at least purchase recycled bags like those from Seventh Generation.

These are all affordable, eco-friendly steps that you can take to fully enjoy one of your favorite rooms.

Let’s face it: spilling coffee on our lap, splashing spaghetti on our favorite white shirt and finding an exploded ballpoint pen in our pocket are all everyday occurrences.

We can’t avoid stains, even if we practice living an eco-lifestyle, but we can avoid the toxic chemicals that are used in most stain removers. There are plenty of natural ingredients we can use to zap those stains beyond oblivion, and they’re also much cheaper than splurging on a big name brand product.

Removing Stubborn Stains

Here are some of the most common and pesky stains that we encounter everyday, and the natural, organic ingredients you can use to make them disappear:

Coffee Stains

For coffee stains on clothes, gently blot the stain away with a damp paper towel. Then mix 1/3 cup vinegar with 2/3 cup warm water and blot out the stain.

You can also use moist salt to remove stains from coffee cups.

Grease and Oil

For stains on carpets, mix ¼ cup of salt with ¾ cup of rubbing alcohol and rub the stain gently.

For grease and oil stains on clothes you can try borax on a damp cloth, or cornstarch rubbed into the stain.

Wine

For wine stains and other red stains, you can rub salt directly into the stain and rinse away. You can also pour boiling water or white distilled vinegar directly onto the stain and rub away.

Perspiration

Gently rub baking soda or vinegar into the troubled area and voila, no sweat stains!

Tomato Sauce

Rub cornstarch into the stain, let it stay for 20 minutes, and then rub off with cloth or a brush.

Ballpoint Pens

Soak the stain in milk for at least 15 minutes and then rub away.

Blood

Soak the fabric in cold salty water. Do NOT use hot water because it will allow the stain to set.

Gum and Wax

If you get wax or chewing bum on your clothing, rub it with ice until it freezes, and then break it off.

Rust

Evenly spread a layer of salt and lemon juice over the rust and rub away.

It’s nice to know that there are regular household products that we can use to get rid of pesky stains.

If only there was a natural remover for people that litter’

Did you know that the average American consumes about 3 cups of coffee a day? That’s a lot of used coffee grinds going into the trash.

Did you know that the average American consumes about 3 cups of coffee a day? That’s a lot of used coffee grinds going into the trash.

There are actually many ways you can recycle and reuse your old coffee grinds to help preserve the environment and maintain your health.

A Cup of Joe Goes a Long Way

We researched many sources to find the best ways to reuse old coffee grinds.

You’d be surprised at just how many different methods have worked for people:

Touch up furniture and other wood scratches with grounds and a Q-tip

Sprinkle around areas where pesky insects, slugs and snails dwell to drive them away

Mix with soil as a natural fertilizer for plants

Dye clothing or paper

Rub into your dog as an organic flea dip

Fill old nylons and hang in your closet or fridge to repel odors

Use to fill old pin cushions

Scrub away grease and grime from pots and pans

Throw on ashes before cleaning out the fireplace to reduce dust from spreading

Feed to worms to help with your garden

Rub on your hands to eliminate odors

Mix ¼ grinds with one egg white and massage onto face like a mud pack

If you’re not an avid coffee drinker but you live near a coffee shop or café, you can always ask them for the old grinds. Places like Starbucks actually give bags of used grinds away to people who use them for their home and gardens.

Recycling is just one way that we can help maintain the natural beauty of our environment, so next time you drink a cup of coffee save those coffee grinds for future use.

Also, don’t forget to check out our blog on Organic Coffee.

There are a number of completely natural and organic ingredients out there with which to make your own insect repellent. It’s easy to make, smells good, and repels little critters so that you can properly enjoy a good spring day!

Combine all ingredients in a spray bottle. Takes 20 minutes to make. Lasts 6 months. Apply by spraying lightly on body before enjoying nature.
