Food Recycling Law Hits San Francisco

Did you know that it’s a crime to throw away your food scraps in San Francisco? According to a new city law it is, so you better watch where you put the food that you don’t eat.

Following the lead that Seattle, Washington residents took in April of last year, as of today the people of San Francisco are now required to recycle all of their household’s extra food waste. How do they do it? They place the food in a sealed compost bin that gets picked up by the city’s curbside recycling program.

Drake University Campus Begins Single Stream Recycling

Drake University, one of the oldest law schools in the country, recently adopted a single-stream recycling program for its campus in Des Moines, Iowa. The university has teamed with Greenstar Recycling, one of North America’s leading waste-management companies, and Metro Waste Authority, an independent government agency that has created many cost-effective waste management programs.

Drake University will be the first college in Des Moines to enact a single stream recycling program.

Bates College Turns Trash to Treasure with Annual Trashion Show

Bates College, a private liberal arts college located in Lewiston, Maine, was recently recognized as a top green school by the Princeton Review and ecoAmerica’s Green Honor Roll, which rated over 600 colleges on their environmental policies, practices and academic offerings.

Maybe Bates received the rave review because 82% of its entire campus food waste is composted, recycled, or sent to a food bank or pig farmer, or maybe it’s because of the annual trash to treasure Trashion Show, which showcases some of the coolest outfits made from trash that was once bound for the landfill.

Miami Metrozoo Reuses Animal Waste

Visiting the zoo has always been a favorite pastime for Americans because they get to see exotic animals from other countries. In fact, over 80% of the cities in the U.S. have their very own zoo complete with animals, rides, refreshments, and….animal waste?

It’s true. Zoos create millions of pounds of animal waste each day, and one of those zoos is the Miami Metrozoo. But the zoo has come up with a “zoo doo” recycling waste plan that takes the waste from animals and composts it into fertilizer.

Warren Wilson College EcoDorm goes LEED Platinum

Warren Wilson College has officially become the first college campus to have a building with LEED Platinum certification as defined under the U.S. Green Building Council. That’s quite a feat considering that the U.S. Green Building Council sets the highest standards for green buildings.

The EcoDorm was built by a committee of Warren Wilson students, faculty and administrators, with the help of the Samsel Architects of Asheville, a North Carolina firm that strives to incorporate green building techniques into their designs.

Two Iowa State University researchers, Najeeb Kuzhiyil and Song-Charng Kong, working with the Department of Defense, have designed a biodiesel engine that can increase the power output of its biodiesel fuel and also work effectively at recycling waste…. and it’s all by dissolving polystyrene packing peanuts in biodiesel.
